Beautiful model railway of steam trains and steam locomotives used in East Germany

After World War II, there were two railway companies in Germany: The German Federal Railway (“Deutsche Bundesbahn”) in West Germany and the German Reich Railways (“Deutsche Reichsbahn”) in East Germany. After German reunification, Deutsche Bundesbahn and Deutsche Reichsbahn were merged to form one company, namely “Deutsche Bahn AG”, the national railway company of Germany.

For over 40 years, rail transport in East Germany was characterised by trains operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. These were mainly steam trains and diesel trains. In rural regions in particular, there were narrow-gauge railways and small branch lines that were operated exclusively with steam locomotives. This period of East German railway traffic offers a rich repertoire for railway modelling. This is why there are many railway enthusiasts in Germany who have specialised in modelling of former, now forgotten, historic railway lines.

Franz Rittig is a well-known railway modeller who depicts the railway infrastructure of the North German region Mecklenburg in his model railways. His latest model railway in 1/87 scale consists of two dioramas on an area of 2.7 m x 0.4 m x 0.5 m. The left-hand diorama depicts the train station of Friedrichsruhe and the right-hand diorama depicts the train station of Alt Warnow.
