Due to their long tradition, industrial railways are a very popular subject for railway modelling or model railroading. Dr. Michael Giersberg is one of those railway modellers or model railroaders who specialized in the reproduction of narrow gauge field railways in East Germany. His model train diorama constructed in HOn30 scale depicts a small village with a quarry in the 1960s.

This is № 561 of Pilentum's model railroad videos. For over 40 years, rail transport in East Germany was characterised by trains operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. In rural regions in particular, there were narrow-gauge railways and small branch lines that were operated exclusively with steam locomotives. This period of East German railway traffic offers a rich repertoire for railway modelling. Franz Rittig is a well-known railway modeller who depicts the railway infrastructure of the North German region Mecklenburg in his model railways. His latest model railway in 1/87 scale consists of two dioramas on an area of 2.7 m x 0.4 m x 0.5 m depicting the train station of Friedrichsruhe and Alt Warnow.

Robert Strachan, a model railway enthusiast from the United Kingdom, has built his model train diorama on an area of 5 feet 8 inches by 13 inches, approximately 180 cm x 30 cm. The model rail layout is a shelf layout respectively a small shunting model railroad layout or switching model railway layout.
