In rural regions in particular, there were narrow-gauge railways and small branch lines that were operated exclusively with steam locomotives. This period of East German railway traffic offers a rich repertoire for railway modelling. Franz Rittig is a well-known railway modeller who depicts the railway infrastructure of the North German region Mecklenburg in his model railways. His latest model railway in 1/87 scale consists of two dioramas on an area of 2.7 m x 0.4 m x 0.5 m depicting the train station of Friedrichsruhe and Alt Warnow.

This is the special feature of model railroader Wieger Pasman, who demonstrates that less can be more with his understated atmospheric model train city edge diorama. He was inspired by the desolate atmosphere of the Parisian district of La Plaine Saint Denis and built a diorama in HO scale with an industrial yard crossed on one side by a main line railway.

The 65-square-meter section wants to depict many typical attractions of Patagonia in 1/87 scale, for example, the Perito Moreno Glacier, where every few minutes blocks of ice crash into the water. There are not only the modern trains operated by the state-owned railway company called “Tren Patagónico”, but also the old steam trains running on narrow-gauge tracks and widely known as “La Trochita”.

In recent years, the Polish model railway club “Polska Makieta Modułowa H0 - Grupa Modelarska” and its members have surprised visitors at international model railway exhibitions with extremely detailed and lovingly designed HO scale model train layouts. A member of the club, Leszek Lewiński, presents a Polish narrow-gauge model rail diorama in museum quality. His model railroad layout is called “Over the Roofs of Kwidzyn” (“Nad dachami Kwidzyna”).

Robert Strachan, a model railway enthusiast from the United Kingdom, has built his model train diorama on an area of 5 feet 8 inches by 13 inches, approximately 180 cm x 30 cm. The model rail layout is a shelf layout respectively a small shunting model railroad layout or switching model railway layout.
