Since 1986, the German model railroading club “Eisenbahnfreunde Kahlgrund” has been building on a beautiful model railroad layout of a historic mountain and valley railroad line located in Bavaria, Germany. Then, the model railroaders - a nucleus of hobbyists interested in the German railroad history between the steam and diesel power era - started building their layout in HO scale (1/87).
Today the layout takes 8.0 x 8.0 meters and consists of over 200 meters of tracks, 72 points/switches and 20 signals as well as a large, double-track helix below the mountain (see, end of Pilentum’s video). Furthermore, the layout has one major freight yard and a passenger station. In addition, there is a large “shadow station”, staging yard or fiddle yard, which is located underneath the layout. Model trains are utilizing an Intellibox DCC control system.
