Did you know that France consistently tops the list as the world’s most visited destination? It does not take much imagination to see why: Just think about captivating cities and villages, impressive landscapes, enviable coastline, seductive lifestyle and some of the world’s best food and wine. France is not only one of the most visited travel destinations, but also one of the most beautiful themes for model railroading, railway modelling and rail transport modeling.
French landscapes, the lifestyle, the tranquillity of the small villages and the special railcars called “Autorail” inspired Jan van Remmerden to build a very realistic looking model railroad layout in O scale. Although Jan van Remmerden is not a Frenchman - he lives in the Netherlands, he has captured the French lifestyle and created a little masterpiece with its model of the railway station of the small village called “Jean-Ville”.
On a wooden board measuring 2 x 0.5 meters, we discover a narrow-gauge single-track line with cargo traffic that is used by both a small goods train loaded with timber and a railbus called “Autorail Billard”. The station with its neat little station building, which is located just below the village, is reached through a tunnel on the right side. In front of the station, the single-track track splits: one track leads to the platform and the second track is used for passing freight trains.
On the left side, shortly behind the station, there is also a crossing track. A track branches off to a small engine shed where shunting diesel locomotives are housed. Further to the left, the line disappears into the woods behind the engine shed. On the right in front of the station, there is a small business with a warehouse with a completely rusted roof. There is an old tractor in the warehouse. In front of the warehouse, goods are being unloaded from a small truck.
The village’s market square is a wonderful feature of the model train layout. The market square is located to the left of the train station on a hill. Two guests are sitting in front of the café and an old “Citroën Traction Avant”, also called “Citroën 7”, “Citroën 11”, “Citroën 15/6” or “Citroën Big Fifteen Sedan”, is parked next to the house with balcony. By the way, there is also a Citroën DS parked under the tree, right next to the train station.
