US Model Railroad Layout On30 gauge (O Scale) with Steam Trains and Steam Locomotives depicting narrow-gauge Railways in Mining and Timber Industry in the Rocky Mountains

This beautiful model railroad layout was built by model railroader Fredy Coenen and the members of the model railroad club “Modelspoorvereniging Midden-Limburg” (Netherlands). The On30 gauge layout is called “Stirmouth & Southern Railroad Company.” The model railway layout and its fictional landscape depicts the atmosphere of American narrow-gauge railways in the Rocky Mountains in the 1930s. At that time, narrow-gauge railways were often used in mountainous landscapes with steep gradients and tight curves for mining and the timber industry.

This extremely detailed miniature world, measuring approximately 3.5 x 7.5 meters, features a copper mine with corresponding buildings. The focus is, of course, on the railroad, which has a small train station, a locomotive shed with a turntable, and a workshop. In addition to the copper mine, there is also a sawmill. All the houses, sheds, bridges, and even the turntable were built by hand.

In addition to steam trains and steam locomotives, there is also a rail vehicle with a combustion engine, namely a so-called “Galloping Goose” made by the Rio Grande Southern Railroad. This rail bus was a combination of a rail vehicle and a car. The rail bus was developed to enable smaller transports to be carried out more cost-effectively than with traditional steam locomotives. The nickname “Galloping Goose” came about because of the rail bus's wobbly movement on the tracks.
