In this video, we discover a beautiful model train diorama in HO scale that was built with extreme care and precision by German model railroad enthusiast Helmut Langenberg. Although he lives in Germany, he has fallen in love with the Swiss railways. In recent years, he has built a large model railroad layout, called “Appenfluher Tal” in the basement of his house, which is truly a masterpiece and work of art.
Pilentum Television will present this large model railway layout in the coming months. Helmut Langenberg actually thought that his large model train layout had long been finished, but he kept discovering small inconsistencies. However, before he wanted to make changes to the existing model railroad layout, he was keen to test the improvements on a small train diorama.
Therefore, the diorama, we see in this video, was created out of Helmut Langenberg’s need to improve his skills in rail transport modeling. The craftsmanship that Helmut Langenberg wanted to learn included the absolutely realistic depiction of nature, trees and shrubs. Also weathering of locomotives, trains and rail infrastructure were part of his improvements in model making.
From the outset, it was clear that the model train diorama should feature Swiss standard gauge railways, mountains, Alpine landscapes and a mountain stream. The model train diorama was not intended to be a replica of an existing railway line, for example of the famous Gotthard Railway in Switzerland. But of course the breathtaking railway lines of Switzerland were the inspiration for his model railroad layout.
The idea was to create a kind of shelf layout that would allow trains to travel through the scenery from left to right. Helmut Langenberg chose the beginning of early autumn as the season for his miniature world, i.e. the time when the leaves on the trees change color but have not yet fallen to the ground. Furthermore the model railway layout was to be dominated by a double-track stone arch viaduct with bridge railing and with the old catenary masts used by the Swiss Federal Railways. Special grass mats, finest track ballast, deciduous and coniferous model trees are intended to provide a lifelike representation. Finally, a small group of hikers completes the landscape.
The result is a model train diorama with a depth of 42 cm, a width of 180 cm, and a height of 60 cm. The entire miniature world is housed in a wooden box. What makes the model railroad layout so appealing, that Pilentum Television spent more than ten minutes filming model trains from different perspectives, are the results of the model-building skills that Helmut Langenberg wanted to try out, refine and optimize.
He improved the viaduct by plastering the large inner arch and some cracks in the structure with plaster. He then reworked the entire structure with watercolors and various powder paints. As a result, the viaduct looks absolutely realistic at first glance. The tunnel portals on the left and right sides of the miniature world are also handmade. Helmut Langenberg did not like prefabricated tunnel portals. So he made the tunnel portals and the corresponding retaining walls himself from rigid foam panels. The landscape was also preformed from hard foam sheets. The entire hard foam sheet landscape was later covered with plaster. The rocks were then modeled and colored after drying. The tracks and track bed were also recolored.
Once this work was complete, Helmut Langenberg began greening and planting his miniature Swiss world. The overhead line masts and contact wire were not installed and tensioned until the landscaping was almost complete. One particularly important element in the diorama was still missing: the mountain stream located below the viaduct. Helmut Langenberg used “Glosscoat” casting resin from the manufacturer “Vosschemie”. This is a cold-curing, solvent-free, and transparent casting resin. After the resin had dried thoroughly for two days, he used paint to create a wavy water surface. Finally, he applied white paint to the water surface with a small brush to depict the swirls typical of a mountain stream as realistically as possible.
Now you can understand why Pilentum Television spent over ten minutes filming this little masterpiece in HO scale. It's not just the trains, but the overall impression that captivates the viewer, because there are many remarkable details and lovely little touches to discover in every scene.
