In this video Pilentum Television presents a superb HO scale model railway layout of Switzerland, which contains so many beautiful details that you won’t believe your eyes. Quite apart from the many model trains and electric locomotives that run with active pantographs, there is also an extraordinary beauty of the model railroad scenery. There are such beautiful buildings with incredibly detailed facades and walls, for example the historic castle on the mountain, the grand church, the steel bridges, the old farm or the small train station, that you think you are in a real world. But it’s just a miniature world, called “Appenfluher Tal” (“Valley of Appenfluh”), built by German model railroader Helmut Langenberg in 1/87 scale.
Helmut Langenberg loves model railroading and began building his Swiss miniature world in 2001. Since then, he has been busy perfecting his model railroad layout step by step. Extensive modifications in recent years, including the extension of three levels and weathering of locomotives, trains, building and landscapes, have resulted in a magnificent H0 gauge model railway layout based on Swiss Federal Railways. The model train layout was built on an area measuring 400 cm wide and 260 cm deep. The model rail layout consists of a total of three levels with associated hidden stations (fiddle yards) and track loops. The landscape surface was formed using chicken wire, newspaper, plaster bandages and hard foam panels.
The model railroad layout is based on Märklin’s three-rail system. Model trains are controlled digitally using Märklin’s “Control Unit 6021” and two additional speed controllers. The entire track system consists of Märklin’s “K Track” with contact studs located in the middle of the tracks. The tracks are laid in a pre-ballasted foam track bed. In addition, the entire track bed was reworked and colored with track ballast from the manufacturer NOCH. Of course, no Swiss model railway layout would be complete without overhead lines: The masts, crossbeams, insulators and contact wires are made by the manufacturer Sommerfeldt. The rolling stock consists of locomotives, passenger and freight cars made by Märklin, Roco, Liliput, Fleischmann, Jouef and Mehano. Another typical feature that corresponds meticulously to the original Swiss Federal Railways is the left-hand traffic of the trains.
Three levels and several fiddle yards in the background result in a large number of routes for the model trains. Trains leaving on the lowest level, first arrive at the tunnel exit and cross a steel bridge. The railway line runs past a hiking trail to a second steel bridge, where the small lake can be seen in the foreground. In the tunnel behind the second steel bridge, the model trains travel up to the second level via a spiral track (helix). On this route, trains can only be seen for a brief moment before they disappear behind the mountains again to climb the third level. On the third level, the trains finally reach the little train station. Only smaller regional trains and light railcars of the Swiss Federal Railways, such as the “Red Arrow,” stop at the train station. All other passenger and freight trains pass through the small station and reach the next tunnel. Behind this tunnel, model trains enter a turning loop and begin their return journey in the opposite direction until they arrive back at the lowest level.
This video is designed in such a way that model trains and model landscape are the highlights of the presentation. There are over 160 individual video scenes, which are harmoniously edited and arranged. No video scene is repeated, so that new train sets can always be seen from different angles. On Helmut Langenberg’s website, available in German language, you will find track plans and detailed information.
