In rural regions in particular, there were narrow-gauge railways and small branch lines that were operated exclusively with steam locomotives. This period of East German railway traffic offers a rich repertoire for railway modelling. Franz Rittig is a well-known railway modeller who depicts the railway infrastructure of the North German region Mecklenburg in his model railways. His latest model railway in 1/87 scale consists of two dioramas on an area of 2.7 m x 0.4 m x 0.5 m depicting the train station of Friedrichsruhe and Alt Warnow.

Olaf Brabandt is a German model railroader who builds run-down, abandoned and dirty industrial sites, for example steelworks, coal plants, refineries and chemical plants. In the last seven years, he built a model railroad layout in HO scale representing a part of the typical large-scale industry of the former GDR. It is an industrial yard built with a high level of detail: Patina, dirt, dust and grime are everywhere. Buildings, locomotives and freight cars are also carefully weathered.
