Model Train Diorama of the East Somerset Railway at Cranmore Station (British Model Railway Layout)

Eric Hines constructed a very delightful model railway layout that has been well modelled in every aspect. The model train diorama depicts a real place, namely the headquarters of the East Somerset Railway at Cranmore Station. Today the East Somerset Railway is a heritage railway in Somerset, running between Cranmore and Mendip Vale.

The railway was once part of the former Cheddar Valley Line that ran from Witham to Yatton, meeting the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway at Wells. The East Somerset Railway Company was incorporated in 1856 and was built as a 7 ft 1⁄4 in (2,140 mm) broad gauge line. Some years later the East Somerset Railway was bought by the Great Western Railway, shortly after it was converted to 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge.

The model train layout appears to accurately portray the real place well according to historic photos. Almost everything is either scratch built or kit built. The depth of the model railroad layout is limited, but the backscene helps to give a feeling of spaciousness that otherwise would not be possible.

It is a typical shunting layout with rail traffic between the right and left side of the diorama. The miniature world is built in “ScaleSeven” or S7 scale, a set of finescale model railway standards for 1/43.5 (7 mm scale) using true-to-prototype track and wheel standards. This scale is principally used to model British standard gauge (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in or 1,435 mm) or Great Western Railway broad gauge (7 ft or 2,134 mm).
