At the model train exhibition, called “Faszination Modellbahn”, in Mannheim, Germany, the Dutch model railroader Paul Roodbol presented his extremely detailed model railway layout named “Berkeldam” in HO scale. The model train layout is approximately 2.5 x 0.6 meters in size and depicts the Dutch railway history around 1960.
Paul Roodbol, who is a member of the model railway club “Modelspoorclub Veluwezoom”, had built model train layouts based on German trains for more than 40 years. But the older he gets, the more he remembers his childhood and the railway history of the Netherlands. Therefore, he decided to create a Dutch model railroad layout. His wish was to build as much as possible himself and to use as few prefabricated accessories as possible. He also wanted his Dutch model rail layout to be extremely detailed.
With these specifications in mind, he painted all the buildings himself with an airbrush. Some buildings, offered by the manufacturers “Artitec”, “Tilly Models” and “Holland Scale”, were completely redesigned and decorated with loving details. In order to perfectly depict the year 1960 in his miniature world, Paul Roodbol also re-built and converted most of the locomotives himself. The result is an imaginary Dutch city in 1/87 scale, featuring a local railway line, a harbour, an old town and some industrial companies.
