If you look at Pilentum’s website, you will find a notice that any model railway enthusiast can publish a video of his model train layout on Pilentum Television, see https://www.pilentum.org/submit-video. László Balogh from Hungary took advantage of this opportunity and shot videos of his model railway layout, which Pilentum edited into a video film worth seeing.
When Pilentum saw the first photos, with which László Balogh had proposed his model railroad layout, it was immediately clear that it was a great work of art that László Balogh had built in 1/120 scale, also known as TT scale.
László Balogh’s miniature world depicts a fictitious part of the landscape in Hungary in the 1990s. The main subject is a railway marshalling yard and its associated facilities at a branch line station which is connected to a basalt mine and two railway stations. There is also a hidden railway station (“fiddle yard”) behind the scenes.
He used flexible rails made by manufacturer Tillig for the construction of his model train layout, which is designed in an L-shape on an area of 4.7 x 2.5 meters. The model rail layout has two levels: One in the foreground, where a train station exists, and a level above in the background, where a railway line with an incline exists. The height difference between the two levels is 0.15 meters.
In contrast to modern model railroad systems, which are usually controlled with the help of computers based on the DCC protocol (“Digital Command Control”), the model trains on László Balogh’s model railroad layout are controlled completely analog. So railroad points, also known as railway turnouts or railway switches, are set by hand from a control panel.
It goes without saying that most of the buildings in this miniature world were built by hand. What makes the model railway layout a masterpiece are, of course, the weathered locomotives and patinated trains of the Hungarian State Railways. László Balogh has put a lot of effort into applying dirt and rust to the rolling stock. Even the houses and buildings are weathered. In addition, the model train layout impresses with its beautiful trees, detailed meadows and a great landscape design.
