In Germany, there is a very old model railroad exhibit built in O gauge or 1/45 scale. On this railroad layout any toy train is made by hand. Pilentum would like to show you two special diesel trains in this video: The famous DB Class VT 08 and the DRG Class SVT 877. The famous DB Class VT 08. VT means “Verbrennungstriebwagen” in German, and “Diesel-Electric Powered Train” in English.
Starting in 1952, the new class VT 08 diesel-electric powered rail car came into use on the long-distance express network for the new German Federal Railroad. These diesel trains impressed people because of their elegant streamlined shape. Inside the train, there was a galley, a dining area, a writing compartment, and a mail compartment.
The very comfortable DB Class VT 08 trains ran on all the important long-distance railway lines in Germany. The DRG Class SVT 877, also known as the “Hamburg Flyer” or “Flying Hamburger”, was Germany’s first fast diesel train. Since 1933, this diesel-electric powered train was used to carry passengers on the Berlin-Hamburg railway line. The speed was about 286 km/h or 178 mph.
