There are basically three different designs for model railway layouts. The first design involves constructing model train layouts as a complete unit in a separate room. This design is common in many private model railroad layouts. The second design is often seen at model railway exhibitions, where compact model train layouts are presented like a train diorama in a display case. The third design is found in modular model railroad layouts, where individual modules are installed one behind the other to allow flexible configuration of the size and track length. There is no universal guideline for the best design for model rail layouts. Ultimately, a model railroad layout must appeal through its beauty, through its uniqueness, through its details, and much more.
When we talk about modular model railroad layouts, the individual modules usually consist of small miniature worlds that have been created by different members of a model railway club. The tracks and electronic cables are always laid according to a uniform standard, but the landscaping often varies greatly. Sometimes the differences between modules are so great that the overall impression is not harmonious at all. But in this video, we see a modular model train layout in which each module is designed to absolute perfection and in great detail. Some would say that the model railway layout has been built to museum quality. Each module harmonizes perfectly with the others. There is also a background wall (wallpaper) at the rear, which creates an outstanding overall impression.
The modular model train layout was built by the German model railway club “HEB Hobbyeisenbahner 1983”. The railway modules are extremely detailed and precisely constructed. The club members love challenging model building in HO scale. The railroad modules for exhibitions are always designed to be compatible with digital control (DCC). Märklin tracks or Märklin rolling stock are not used. The modules are ideal for organizing model train exhibitions with a lot of train traffic. The railroad modules can be configured either as a double-track main line or as a single-track branch line to present a lot of railroad traffic to the viewers. The whole miniature world features trains from the 1980s and 1990s belonging to the German State Railways. Of course, scale models from more modern railway eras can also be seen from time to time, for example, the class 605 multiple units, known as “ICE TD” or “Diesel ICE.”
Pilentum Television is very critical of modular model railways because filming is often made very difficult by missing background walls, ugly module transitions, or a motley assortment of rolling stock (electric locomotives without overhead lines). Sometimes model trains travel much too fast through these modular miniature worlds. However, the modular model railroad, made by the members of the “HEB Hobbyeisenbahner 1983”, can undoubtedly be described as miniature masterpieces. These modules represent not simple modular model railroads, but small works of art with a love of detail. With incomparable precision, the members of the club have created unique modules in absolute perfection, with every little detail, such as lanterns, houses, trees, clocks, signals, gravel, and much more. What we see is the result of the highest level of craftsmanship in rail transport modeling. The high level of detail is evident in the correct speed of the trains and the weathering of the buildings. Trees, bushes, grass, and meadows have also been reproduced with overwhelming accuracy.
