The railroad played a significant role in the development of the wood industry or timber industry which is also called lumber industry. Before the railway was invented, logs were transported in large numbers from the forest down rivers either freely or on wooden rafts. Simple wagonways, using horses and wooden rails, were used from the 18th century. However the invention of the steam locomotive and steel rails soon led to these being employed for forestry.
In particularly large areas of forest or forests of unusually large trees, such as in the northwestern US, extensive forest railways were built exclusively for forestry tasks. These difficult terrains within forests meant that narrow-gauge railways, which took up less space, were lighter and easier to build and enabled tight curves to be laid, were preferred. Special geared locomotives such as the Shay and Climax locomotive were developed for high tractive effort on rough track.
Railway transport which is used for forestry tasks, primarily the transportation of felled logs to sawmills or railway stations were the so-called forest railways, which are also called forest trams, timber lines, logging railway or logging railroad. Fascinated by the history of forest railways in the United States of America, the German model railroader Hans Hirblinger has constructed this model railway layout in On30 scale (1/48).
In the small miniature world, which is dominated by the “Bear Lake Lumber Railroad”, all the important facilities of the timber industry are present: Delivered logs are processed in the sawmill. Some of the logs are further processed into end products in the neighboring factory. The remaining logs are transported away either by rail or by ship. Furthermore, there is a separate workshop for the maintenance and repair of the steam locomotives and diesel rail vehicles of the forest railroad. In addition, the model railway layout also features a gorge spanned by a typical trestle bridge (wooden bridge).
