At the Belgian model railway exhibition “Modelspoor Expo”, small model train dioramas or micro model railway layouts are regularly displayed and judged by visitors as part of a model-making competition or model railroading contest. One of those small model railroad layouts caught the eye of many visitors because of the puffing steam locomotives. The careful attention to detail in the model landscape and the perfect lighting resulted in me simply having to film this model train layout.
The miniature world was built by Stefan Cornelis and measures 140 cm x 90 cm. At the rear (under the tram bridge), a tunnel leads to a fiddle yard where additional steam locomotives can be parked. On the left-hand side is a locomotive shed for steam locomotives. In front of it is an additional track where steam locomotives can be refuelled with coal and water. Opposite, on the right-hand side, there is a motive power depot for a diesel railcar (railbus). In the background, an old tramway shuttles back and forth from left to right, adding a touch of movement to the model railway layout.
As Stefan owns three ESU model steam locos in his model railway collection, each fitted with smoke and sound decoders, he wanted to build a small miniature world to showcase shunting operations with the steam locomotives. Because all the steam locomotives date from Era II of German railway history (“Deutsche Reichsbahn”), he decided to build a German railway depot where the maintenance of locomotives and other rolling stock is carried out. Inspired by the historical railway era and those steam locos, he built a locomotive shed that might have looked like one from the 1930s.
In German, a railroad depot used for maintenance and servicing of steam locomotives is known as a “Bahnbetriebswerk” (abbreviated to “BW”); that is why his train diorama is called “BW 1930”. To enhance the atmosphere of this miniature world, he has – as already mentioned – installed a narrow-gauge railway track along the back wall, where a heritage tram is going by.
The model scenery was constructed using static grass and shrubs manufactured by Martin Welberg and model trees manufactured by MBR. The buildings are kits from Faller, Kibri, Joswood and Auhagen, which have been painted, modified and weathered. The railbus in the motive power depot is made by BRAWA. The tracks are made by PECO. The points are fitted with Cobalt motors and can be operated both digitally and manually.
